In this story a teenage boy is interviewing an old man, Ruben Hart, from his Rhode Island town. He is trying to get a good story so he can get a job at the local newspaper. He has heard that the old man was a part of the "rum-running" smuggling that took place during Prohibition.
At first Ruben is not willing to talk about it too much, but eventually opens up and tells the whole story of what it was like for him to be a teenager during those Prohibition years. He was pulled in two directions - trying to do what was right (and legal) and wanting to be a part of the excitement (and make good money too). When he and his friend, whose dad was the town police, discovered a dead body and the murder was covered up, things got dangerous. The boys chose different paths and Ruben finds himself right in the middle of the corrupt system of sneaking illegal alcohol into the country. It is not a safe path to choose.
This is an exciting book with lots of twists to keep you reading. It is also a great story of friendship and makes you think about the choices people make and how it can affect them for many years to come.
